World Water Day

Today is world water day, although if you are aware of the water crisis facing many First Nations and Indigenous communities it might feel more like another Settler greed day. Everytime I use my water I can’t help but be aware of my privilege, to have such easy access where it doesn’t even need to be something I worry about. It also strikes me as comepltely ironic that world water day happens to fall during tax season. Filing our family taxes always makes me a little resentful. Don’t get me wrong I am happy to pay my share, and appreciate the services provided. What I don’t appreciate is where the tax money often seems to end up. It doesn’t go into the promises that were made, but to once again to fund the same corruption. To do acts that I don’t agree with, and to use my dollars for funding makes me complicit. My husband and I often wish we could send our tax dollars to better use, like First Nations and Indigenous communities that need water. Water is life, we cannot exist without it. For any community in Canada to not have water is shameful, the fact that it seems to be affecting many First Nations and Indigenous communities for years is despicable. There are so many places funding is needed, but water should absolutely be a priority and it is time the government takes responsibility and action.

Water

Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1803 - 1882

The water understands
Civilization well;
It wets my foot, but prettily,
It chills my life, but wittily,
It is not disconcerted,
It is not broken-hearted:
Well used, it decketh joy,
Adorneth, doubleth joy:
Ill used, it will destroy,
In perfect time and measure
With a face of golden pleasure
Elegantly destroy.

Thanks Korrie for sharing that, it is beautiful and the perfect way to explain water. I am going to bookmark it so I can save it.

So true— our governments hypocrisy in celebrating such a day when we are, not only Treaty people, but water beings — with 95% of our brain being made up of water! The poem is wonderful — will share it on our @2rowflow twitter feed ! Thanks
